Quote Retweets, APPLETV FOR NUNKIND, Adriel's Brandy
TL;DR: Use quote retweets instead for more long-term accuracy.
Let's talk about quote tweets and why they might be more important, plus a word about tweet counts. Yesterday, when we were putting together the newsletter, we noticed something strange: the total number of Tweets as reported by Talkwalker had gone DOWN by quite a bit - like by about 100,000. When we looked at the overall data, it wasn't just a day or two - there were subtle but meaningful changes over time.
Fortunately, our friend and colleague Jereczko separately and independently maintains an hourly count of tweets, and when we imported her dataset, we started to see the differences more clearly - and they add up.
Here's the Talkwalker count:
Here's Jereczko's count:
Why is there such a difference? Because Talkwalker queries the Twitter Enterprise API for a current state snapshot at the time of request. What exists at the time of request is what shows up in the Talkwalker report, even for data in the past.
Jereckzo's report shows what she gathered from Tweetbinder on that day - and then she doesn't go back and make any changes.
So why would there be such a huge disparity? Because of retweets. Functionally, in the Twitter back-end, a retweet is nothing more than a regular tweet with an RT: appended to the front of it, and a field linking the retweet to the original tweet. But there's a catch with retweets, an important catch that doesn't apply to quote tweets.
When you delete the original tweet, every retweet tied to the original also vanishes.
This behavior does NOT apply to quote retweets. So why would this cause such big changes in the reporting? Because over time, as people come and go from the campaign, they delete their accounts. There are a fair number of accounts on Twitter with bios like "Just here to save Warrior Nun" and variations - and if those accounts accrued a lot of retweets and then one day were deleted by the owner, every tweet and every regular retweet also vanishes with them. There was one account from early on in the campaign that would get hundreds of retweets on every tweet. The owner of that account deleted, and all those retweets vanished.
That brings us to a measurement question: which is the more important measure? What we can see on any given day, which is most accurate now, or what was done on any given day, regardless of whether or not we can find the original, now deleted tweets? If we were a for-profit business answerable to auditors, the answer would be the first scenario. We would be required to prove that what's in our reports is what actually exists. But we're not a for-profit business. We're not a business at all. We're a fandom, and so the historical record of what happened - regardless of who has come and gone in the fandom - is more important. The fandom earned those tweets and retweets even if hundreds of thousands of them are gone now because the account owners deleted.
Going forward, we will be capturing and storing both sets of data, which anyone is welcome to audit in this Google Sheet. The Talkwalker data is stored in tab 1, and Jereczko's static counts are stored in tab 5. For our countdowns to important events like Simon's 15M update space, we will be using Jereczko's data as the official system of record because it accurately reflects the hard work you have done to get to the milestone.
What should you do differently? If you have the time, please consider quote retweeting instead of regular retweeting, because quote tweets do not vanish if the original tweet is destroyed. To keep things speedy, here's an easy process. First, type the phrase of the day in a text document. Add the #savewarriornun and #warriornun hashtags, like so:
APPLETV FOR NUNKIND #SaveWarriorNun #WarriorNun
And then as you quote tweet, just copy and paste that into your quote retweet. It adds a couple seconds more to the process, but it ensures your hard work sticks around even if the original tweet doesn't.
Please share and recommend this newsletter to fellow Halo Bearers!

A reminder: One of the major aims of the campaign is to get more mainstream media coverage. Mainstream media publishers don’t care about retweets - they make their money on page views and even compensate writers based on how many people read their articles. The more we help them, the more they help cover us.
